Time critical shutdown scaffold
Parfitt Construction contacted Layher’s engineering team to design a scaffold for the Tekapo Intake Gate project. This complex and time critical shutdown project was located at Genesis Energy’s Tekapo A Hydro Power Station intake in Tekapo, Canterbury. Alex Parfitt from Parfitt construction said “Part of our contract was to provide safe access down a 22 metre vertical shaft, for the installation of a 49 tonne gate with hydraulic operating ram. The gate was to be installed in a 6 metre tunnel which was originally constructed in the 1940’s.”
Time critical scaffold
“The vertical shaft measured 14m in diameter and required excavation and construction. Layher’s engineers came up an impressive solution using Layher Allround Scaffolding and platform stairs. With safety front of mind, Layher designed a modular scaffold, which could be constructed in sections at ground level and then craned into position. This meant our guys could build the scaffold quickly in a safe and controlled environment, which significantly reduced the amount of work required underground.” said Alex.
Series of shutdowns
Alex continued “Layher’s team were very responsive and their drawings, including methodology, helped us plan this time critical project accurately. The client had to have a series of shutdowns to do the job – when they weren’t generating electricity and it was important that all steps in the sequence were completed efficiently. The project team finished the job on time and the efficient and modular Layher system was a big help. We’d also like to thank Darcy and the team from Geeves Scaffolding Timaru, for helping us throughout the project.”
Award winning shutdown project
Genesis Energy’s Tekapo A New Intake Gate project later went on to win the Civil Contractors New Zealand – Construction Excellence Awards 2021 supreme prize, in category 3 – projects with a value of between $20m and $100m.
