Hydro Power Station safe access

Commissioned in September 1953, the Maraetai Hydro Power Station sits on the Waikato River and annually generates 885 GWh of electricity. Waikato Scaffolders Limited were contracted to provide safe access for maintenance work on the powerhouse windows.

Shannon Wiki of Waikato Scaffolders Limited said “erection of the powerhouse window access scaffold took four men five days and when complete measured 65 metres long by 8 metres high, and weighed a total of 17 tonne.”

Safe efficient scaffolding

Shannon continued “Layher Allround Lightweight components were used to reduce the amount of tonnage that was required to be manually handled from one end of the building to the other. Combined with the efficient [rosette connection mechanism] of the Layher Allround scaffolding system this allowed a quick install and fast removal. Dismantling took four men just three days.”

During the build the scaffolding crew took turns erecting the suspended section of the scaffold. “The challenge of safely erecting scaffolding over the powerful gushing waters was something you don’t do every day and the guys really enjoyed that part of the job” said Shannon.

Layher’s quick engineering team

Waikato Scaffolders Limited provided Layher with a basic scaffold sketch. Shannon commented “Layher’s engineering team quickly turned around a detailed scaffold design and gear list which greatly assisted the scaffold erection.”

In conclusion, the contractor, Karl Mason Builders, said “the access provided by Waikato Scaffolders, and the Layher Allround Lightweight scaffolding system, worked perfectly!”
