Rolling Bascule Bridge by Northland Scaffolding

Rolling Bascule Bridge

Northland Scaffolding was recently commissioned to provide access and weather protection for this new bridge build in Whangarei.

80tonnes of ballast

The scaffold and encapsulation solution for the lifting section of bridge was constructed using Layher Allround, approximately 27m in length, and linked together using 15m aluminium bridging beams at 3m centres. The structure was then wrapped to provide weather protection for welding and coating to be completed. A second 20m tall scaffold was also constructed around the counterweight arm of the lifting section of the bridge using Layher Allround to allow access to fill the arms with 80tonnes of ballast.

Highest quality

The Bridge’s UK based architect, Martin Knight commented that the care and attention to detail of McConnell Dowell, the main contractor, and its subcontractors was exceptional and uniformly of the very highest quality. The 265m long and 17m wide bridge, which opened in July 2013, is expected to carry up to 8,000 vehicles a day and will offer quicker access to Whangarei’s airport.
