Keith Spry FlexBeam Birdcage
Wellington Scaffolding Services were contracted by Holmes Wellington to provide access to the entire ceiling at Keith Spry Pool. Works to be undertaken included earthquake strengthening, skylight replacement, as well as the installation of new ceiling panels.
FlexBeam innovation
With an area 45m by 30m, and up to 11m at the highest point, this was never going to be a small task. Lee Saunders of Wellington Scaffolding Services said, “after considering our options, we decided this was the perfect opportunity to put Layher’s new FlexBeam innovation to the test. The design worked perfectly and made installation a breeze once the crews got the hang of the new parts.”

Happy client
“The amount of gear and time saved in this instance, by using FlexBeams, was exactly what we needed to catch a break during an extremely busy period for the company. The client has been extremely happy with the outcome here and as a team we’re keen to continue using this system wherever possible,” said Lee.
Advantages of FlexBeam
Layher’s engineering team assisted Wellington Scaffolding Services with the design of this solution. Their objective being to minimise the amount of scaffold material required, especially the supporting scaffold. This FlexBeam birdcage solution provided 3x 9m wide unsupported spans, significantly reducing the amount of Layher Allround required. The other advantage of Layher’s new FlexBeam product is that it provides a completely seamless working platform, no gaps and no trip hazards.

Faster installation
Layher’s FlexBeam solution enables faster installation of scaffolding decks. Layher’s U-decks can be pushed out along the FlexBeam, safely from behind a guardrail. The Layher FlexBeam structure was also designed to support a mobile Allround scaffold on top, enabling workers to easily reach the apex of the roof. This helped to reduce the total amount of scaffold equipment required for this project.
More efficient logistics
Wellington Scaffolding Services also successfully trialled Layher’s new pneumatic pallet castor wheels on this project. The benefit being more efficient movement of scaffold parts to and from the pool complex. Pneumatic castor wheels make the movement of heavy pallets much simpler when the ground is uneven or there are cracks or bumps. They also help protect sensitive surfaces like ceramic tile or wooden floors.
