History of the leading scaffolding manufacturer

Layher is the world’s leading designer, manufacturer and distributor of scaffolding and temporary access solutions. The Layher brand is trusted by the trades, construction, energy and manufacturing industries to provide a wide range of residential, commercial, infrastructure, industrial and event applications.

In 1945, Wilhelm Layher set up a company making agricultural implements and ladders out of wood – at that time the number one raw material. During the post-war economic upsurge, the timber merchant soon identified the need for construction scaffolding, and in 1948 specialised in the production of ladder scaffolding.

    Close contact with scaffolding customers

Focusing on maintaining close contact with his customers, he developed the first Layher branches in 1951, building up a sales network that has since grown to 30 service centres all over Germany.

Also working in the new company from the very start were his already adult daughter, Ruth Langer, and his two sons, Eberhard and Ulrich Layher, who successfully continued the business after the death of the company founder in 1962.

    Layher history scaffolding evolved

Under their management, Layher evolved into a world leader in the manufacture of system scaffolding, together with protective and event systems, rolling towers and ladders. With SpeedyScaf in 1965 and Allround Scaffolding in 1974, systems were launched onto the market during this period that still dominate today and that are continually being improved.

    Worldwide expansion

In 1987, the Eberhard Layher branch of the family sold its shares to the families of Ruth Langer and Ulrich Layher. After initial steps towards internationalisation in the 1970s, Layher now has more than 1900 employees working in 140 service centres worldwide, offering advice and materials locally.

Everyone at Layher lives for scaffolding – including the owner-families, Langer and Layher, who think and act with a focus on the future. The company is still 100% family-owned, and its development is guided by the managing partners Carolin Langer and Georg Layher.

    Long term investment

Its main emphases are on an investment policy geared to continuity, the long term, and on attachment to its home in the Zabergäu region of Germany. To assure the high delivery readiness to customers in the long term, production capacities are continually expanded. This enabled a second production plant to be inaugurated in 2009.

    Layher into the future

In 2023, Plant 3 officially opened and is designed to address significantly increased demand. Into the future, “Made by Layher” will therefore continue to mean the same as “Made in Germany”.

Made only in Germany, Layher scaffolding systems are precision manufactured to the most exacting standards in the industry. Layher products and services in scaffolding technology have come to set the standard for performance and reliability in modern scaffolding.
