Caledonia Falsework NX2 Pier B
Caledonia were awarded the falsework job for a series of bridge crossheads on a new roading project in the Warkworth region, north of Auckland.
Falsework scaffold project
Mik Kirasic said, “Caledonia were awarded the NX2 Pier B falsework project because it was based on a design and build concept using the Layher’s Allround modular scaffolding system.”
“We supplied our client (NX2 – Accionia / Fletcher JV) with engineering, design, materials and labour enabling the team to erect the scaffolding structure in less than a week. The entire scaffolding structure, which weighed 40t, measured 25 metres long by 8.5 metres wide and reached a height of 13 metres,” said Mik.
Scaffolding with benefits
The benefits of using Layher’s Allround modular scaffolding were numerous including the fact that Caledonia didn’t have to split bays to achieve height differences on the primary bearers and it was easy to deck out the working level.
Furthermore, Mik said Layher Allround was “quick to erect using 4m standards and bracing at the top lift was left out until the pour so the access deck could be installed to level the formwork decks – which meant that there were two handovers for the project but still better than previous system used in terms of productivity.”
Caledonia faster
Mik and his team were delighted with the speed of Layher’s Allround modular scaffolding and said, “it went up faster than the initial falsework system supplied by a competitor.”

Pūhoi to Warkworth project background information:
The Pūhoi to Warkworth project will extend the four-lane Northern Motorway (SH1) 18.5km from the Johnstone’s Hill tunnels to just north of Warkworth. It is the first stage of the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Wellsford project.
SH1 between Pūhoi and Warkworth is a key transport link connecting the north to the upper North Island freight triangle of Auckland, Waikato and Tauranga.
In November 2016, the Transport Agency awarded a Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract to the Northern Express Group (NX2) for the project. Under the PPP contract, the Northern Express Group will finance, design, construct, manage and maintain the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway for the 25 years that will follow the expected five-year period to build the motorway. Full ownership of the highway will remain with the public sector. The Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway will open to traffic in late 2021.
