Scaffold Stairway to Heaven

Bramwell Scaffolding originally erected this birdcage scaffold with stairway in the historic Knox Church in Dunedin, New Zealand for the installation of fire sprinklers.

Birdcage support

Once up, other restoration work was done, including the removal of dust which had built up to 12mm high in some places, and the varnishing of all the woodwork ceilings. Pews were moved to get bearing on a solid foundation to support the birdcage which was 20 metres high in places.

Church history

Knox Church was designed by RA Lawson in 13th century Gothic style. It is built of local bluestone with limestone facings and slate roof. The church has been the venue for events
 as varied as Bic Runga,
 the St Kilda Brass Band,
the Tower Youth Orchestra and the
City of Dunedin Choir,
 chamber music performances
and organ recitals.

Seating 700 or so, on the sloping ground floor
and gallery on three sides, Knox Church provides
a compact, intimate auditorium for live theatre and
music in a beautiful historic setting. The spire of Knox Church is 50 metres high.
